DESIGN MISTAKES THAT COULD HURT YOUR AIRBNB’S REVIEWS

In the world of short-term lets and Airbnb hosting, great design does more than just look good in photos — it directly impacts your reviews, ratings and repeat bookings. A beautifully styled space can impress at first glance, but if it’s not practical, comfortable or intuitive, guests will notice — and they’ll mention it.

Here are some common interior design mistakes that can hurt your reviews (and how to avoid them).

1. Style Over Function

It’s easy to fall into the trap of prioritising aesthetics over usability. That chic minimalist sofa might look great in your listing photos, but if it’s too firm or too low, guests won’t enjoy sitting on it.

Avoid it: Always test furniture yourself. Opt for stylish yet comfortable pieces that serve their purpose well. Form should follow function, especially in a space that caters to people from all walks of life.

2. Lack of Storage Space

Guests, particularly those staying for more than a night or two, appreciate somewhere to unpack. A lack of wardrobe space or drawers can be frustrating.

Avoid it: Include at least a small wardrobe or hanging rail, a bedside table with drawers, and space in the bathroom for toiletries. Even in compact rentals, clever storage solutions make a big difference.

3. Poor Lighting Choices

Lighting sets the mood and affects functionality. Harsh overhead lights or dimly lit rooms can make your property feel uninviting or impractical.

Avoid it: Layer your lighting. Combine ambient, task, and accent lights. Include bedside lamps, a reading light near the sofa, and good bathroom lighting for mirrors. Warm white bulbs usually create a more homely feel than cool-toned ones.

4. Neglecting Comfort in Key Areas

An uncomfortable mattress or stiff pillows are among the quickest ways to earn a negative review. The same goes for cheap bedding or flimsy towels.

Avoid it: Invest in a decent quality mattress and high thread count sheets. Provide at least two pillow options (soft and firm) and offer plush, clean towels. These small touches go a long way in hospitality.

5. Too Much Clutter (Or Not Enough Personality)

Striking the right balance between sterile and cluttered is a delicate art. A space that’s too sparse can feel cold and impersonal, while one that’s over-decorated can feel overwhelming and messy.

Avoid it: Use a few thoughtful pieces — a framed print from a local artist, a plant, or some coffee table books — to give your space character without overloading it.

6. Ignoring Your Target Market

Designing your rental without considering your ideal guest can lead to poor reviews. A sleek urban studio might be perfect for business travellers but unsuitable for families with children.

Avoid it: Tailor your design to the needs of your audience. Think about safety for families, workspace for professionals, or a romantic touch for couples.

7. Overlooking Maintenance & Cleanability

Some materials and finishes may look great initially, but show wear and tear quickly or are difficult to clean. Shag rugs, white fabric sofas, and textured walls may all cause issues.

Avoid it: Choose hard-wearing, easy-to-clean finishes. Use washable paint, removable cushion covers, and avoid delicate materials in high-traffic areas.

8. Inconsistent Styling

Mismatched décor, clashing styles, or abrupt changes from room to room can make your rental feel chaotic and disjointed.

Avoid it: Create a cohesive design scheme with a consistent colour palette, style, and mood throughout the property. Guests will feel more comfortable in a space that flows naturally.

Your guests are your most valuable critics and their feedback can either elevate your property’s reputation or harm it. While interior design is an important part of attracting bookings, it’s the liveability of the space that keeps guests happy and earns you glowing reviews.

So before adding that statement chair or swapping the bedspread, ask yourself: Will this make my guest's stay better? If the answer is yes, you’re on the right track!
